Dramatic Birth on ‘Jill & Jessa’

On Sunday, TLC aired the finale of Jill & Jessa: Counting On, a three-part special that focused on the two Duggar women we came to know first on 19 Kids and Counting.

In the episode, Jessa gave birth. After two long days of labor, she and her husband, Ben, saw the arrival of their son, Spurgeon. However, the happy occasion quickly gave way to concern. The show featured a 911 call placed not too long after the birth. In the call, Jessa’s mother, Michelle Duggar explained: “Mother is bleeding after birth. She needs to be checked out.” The baby boy, who weighed in at 9 pounds 11 ounces, was just fine. Jessa, on the other hand, needed medical attention. “Right after the baby was born,” Michelle said, “she had a gush of blood, and it was more blood than what should have occurred.” Ben added, “It was kind of scary — it was like, ‘Whoa, that’s a lot of blood, and that’s all at once.’”

Fortunately, Jessa quickly got help, and it wasn’t too long before she was back on her feet. In an interview later, she said, “It was amazing; within hours, I felt 90 percent back to myself.”
