David Gregory Under Investigation by D.C. Police for Holding Gun Clip on Air (Updated)
David Gregory is under investigation by Washington, D.C. police for showing a gun clip on Sunday's "Meet the Press," Politico reported.
The NBC host showed what appeared to be a 30-round gun magazine during a heated interview with the the National Rifle Association's Wayne LaPierre after the shootings in Connecticut earlier this month.
Araz Alali, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department, told Politico on Tuesday that police were investigating the incident. NBC News declined comment.
The D.C. Official Code 7-2506.01, the gun law in question, states: "No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term 'large capacity ammunition feeding device' means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The term 'large capacity ammunition feeding device' shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition."
The Washington Post reported that producers from "Meet the Press" contacted police before the show aired to ask if they could show the high-capacity clip on air. The request was denied.
"NBC contacted MPD inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment," the police said in emails posted online. "NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazines is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated. Thank you for taking the time to bring this matter to our attention."
The police department did not immediately respond to calls from TheWrap for comment.
