Craig Sweeny Re-Ups With CBS TV Studios, Joins ‘Elementary’ As EP, Sells PI Drama To CW With Olé
EXCLUSIVE: Craig Sweeny has signed a new two-year overall deal with CBS TV Studios. Under the pact, Sweeny will serve as an executive producer on the studio’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes CBS drama series Elementary. Additionally, he has teamed with CBS Studios-based Olé for a drama project, which has sold to CW.
Titled Boiling Point, the project, which has received a script commitment, centers on two former members of the boy band Boiling Point°, who, desperate for income after their fifteen minutes of fame are up, open a private detective agency. They cater to a Sunset Strip clientele consisting mostly of the semi-famous, the formerly famous, or the aspiring-to-be-famous while one of them uses the agency as a base of operations to find his missing brother and former band-mate. Sweeney is writing as well as executive producing with Olé principles Richard Shepard, Sean Furst, and Bryan Furst.
Sweeny has been at CBS Studios for most of his career – he landed his first staff writer job on the studio’s USA drama The 4400. His first gig in the business was as working as an assistant to showrunner Rene Echevaria on Fox’s Dark Angel where he met Robert Doherty, who was a writer on James Cameron’s sci-fi series.
From The 4400, Sweeny segued to CBS Studios’ procedural Medium, on which he worked for 6 years, the last three as co-head writer with Doherty under creator/showrunner Glenn Gordon Caron. After Sweeny did a stint as executive producer/showrunner on the first season of the USA/CBS Studios drama Common Law, he and Doherty reunited again earlier this summer, when Sweeny joined Doherty’s new series, Elementary, as a consulting producer. “It was such a pleasure to work with Rob again that we decided to make it official,” Sweeny said about the decision to become an executive producer on the show.
As for staying at CBS Studios, where he has been under overall deals since 2006, “it’s been such a happy relationship, it was a no-brainer to renew my deal,” he said. Sweeny and Olé are with WME. Shepard most recently directed the pilot for the midseason CBS drama Golden Boy. He also helmed the pilot for the CW series Ringer.
