Comic-Con: ‘Psych’ Stars Sing Themselves Silly
Despite speculation that their eighth season may be their last, the cast and crew of USA Network’s “Psych” are sparing no opportunity to spread their special brand of silliness until they’re told to stop — and Comic-Con is no exception.
The troup played Salt N’ Pepa’s “Push It” through their initial clip reel, as cast member Cary Elwes emceed like someone who was half comedian and half WWE announcer. For each comedic flourish, panelists James Roday, Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Tim Omundson, Kirsten Nelson, Corbin Bernsen, Steve Franks, Kelly Kulchak, and Chris Henze were rewarded with the sometimes deafening screams from who they lovingly call their “Psych-Os.”
At one point, Elwes asked the crowd if they wanted to see Hill and Roday do a number from “Psych the Musical,” an episode that airs this fall and one that some lucky fans were treated to a screening of at Wednesday’s Preview Night. The two stars happily obliged, offering an impressive display of a capella.
When Elwes asked how the musical came about and why it took so long, creator and executive producer Franks said he’d known of Hill’s musical talents, but that “James, I’ve heard sing when we shower together sometimes. … Also, actors lie.”
USA Networks president Jeff Watchel also took the mic to enthusiastically announce which plot the show’s online audiences had voted to be used during one of season eight’s episodes. The winner was “Dream Therapy,” which is being renamed “Nightmare on State St.”
When questions turned to the audience, the infectious hilarity continued, including a chance for stars Hill and Roday to engage in a “suck it” sing-off to reference one of the show’s most common phrases.
Also revealed was that cast member Nelson would be directing one of the upcoming episodes of the show.
“It was a hard, hard episode,” she said. “There were many tears. It’s a love song to ‘Psych.’”
All audience members received a “Psych” T-shirt, and fans who asked questions received the book, “Psych’s Guide to Crime Fighting for the Totally Unqualified.”
