Comic-Con: The Best Moments From TV Guide Magazine's Fan Favorites Panel
Fans packed into the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront at Comic-Con on Saturday to for TV Guide Magazine's second annual Fan Favorites panel to catch a glimpse of today's hottest TV stars. Moderator and TV Guide Magazine editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum thanked the fans for their dedicated passion towards these shows and introduced the star-studded panel, which included Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead), Nathan Fillion (Castle), David Giuntoli (Grimm), Joel McHale (Community), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), Jasika Nicole (Fringe), Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Maggie Q (Nikita) and Matt Smith (Doctor Who). Here are a handful of highlights from the laugh-filled hour:
What are some of their favorite TV shows?
While Smith sang the praises of AMC's Breaking Bad, Nicole suggested a role for herself on Showtime's Homeland. "I would like to be the sassy black lady!" she laughed. Callies mentioned she was star struck at the Con when she partied on the TV Guide Magazine yacht with the Game of Thrones cast on Friday. "They almost had to have me removed, I was losing my mind!" she exclaimed.
What's something we don't know about them?
Maggie Q expressed her distaste for men in skinny jeans, Posey revealed he has some tattoos on his butt and Smith mentioned he has very wide feet that makes it very difficult for him to find shoes. But it was McHale who drew the biggest cheers when he revealed: "Last night I danced with Nathan Fillion at the Nerd HQ. His sweat smells like jasmine and the song was 'Lady in Red.'" As for Fillion, he admitted, "I'm afraid of sharks and I'm afraid of bears...the sharks of the forest."
What would happen if their shows crossed over?
The idea of a Community/Fringe crossover was well-received by the audience. "Alternate Astrid would be a perfect love foil for Abed," suggested Nicole. "I'll speak for Abed by saying 'cool, cool, cool,'" replied McHale, who had another idea of his own: "I'd love to combine Spartacus and Hillbilly Handfishin'!" And could Smith be heading to Greendale as well? "I had a [Community] writer ask me to be on the show, and I was like 'yeah!'" he revealed.
Who was the crowd Favorite?
|The loudest cheers were reserved for Smith as Doctor Who fans lined up in droves during the audience Q&A portion of the panel. "What I love about coming here is people are so vocal in the USA," said Englishman Smith. "It's feverish, especially here, so we're very grateful." When a fan asked Smith about other historical figures he'd like to see on Doctor Who, McHale interjected with some hilarious suggestions of his own. "Scooby Doo is one, from the cartoon, not the movies," said McHale. "Charlie Sheen before he went nuts. He was going back in time to stop the Kardashians."
What can fans expect next season?
While some shows from the panel are wrapping their runs next season ("I was really sad," said Mcintyre. "It was really fun killing people every day."), Fillion teased that the romance between Castle and Beckett will be ramped up for Season 5. "There's probably going to be a lot more kissing," he revealed to loud cheers. "There's definitely going to be a lot more kissing, I'm going to make sure!"
Will they work together in the future?
The fans went wild when Fillion suggested Firefly characters for the group, but it was Callies who proposed a new project for the gang of nine. "You guys, can we do a movie together?" asked Callies. "This is the most fun I've ever had at Comic-Con." "Who's the richest person here that can finance it?" asked Maggie Q as she placed her hand on Fillion's shoulder. Now that's one movie we'd all love to see!
