CBS Sets Midseason Schedule, Premiere Dates for ‘Angel From Hell,’ ‘Criminal Minds’ Spinoff

An earlier premiere date for new Jane Lynch comedy “Angel From Hell,” the debut of “Criminal Minds” spinoff “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” and the returns of “Undercover Boss” and “Mike & Molly” are among the highlights of the CBS midseason schedule, announced Monday by the network.

“Undercover Boss” is coming off the bench for a December premiere for the second straight year, airing three special Sunday episodes (Dec. 20, 27, and Jan. 3 at 8 p.m.) before sliding into its regular Friday 8 p.m. timeslot on Jan. 8. On Fridays, it will be serving as a bridge between seasons of “The Amazing Race,” which kicks off its 28th edition on Feb. 12.

The network is making some moves in comedy, starting Wednesday, Jan. 6 when “2 Broke Girls” and “Mike & Molly” take over the 8 o’clock hour for six weeks while “Survivor” (back Feb. 17) is on hiatus. This will be the first action of the season for “Mike & Molly,” which is starting its sixth season, while “2 Broke Girls” moves over from its current Thursday 9:30 p.m. slot.

“Angel From Hell,” previously tapped to premiere in November and then pushed to February, will now bow on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 9:30 p.m., following “Mom.” The earlier start date will allow the network to promote the comedy during the previous night’s “People Choice Awards” on CBS, which Lynch hosts. And it also means “Angel” will be debuting during the winter hiatus of ABC’s timeslot-leading “Scandal.”

“The Odd Couple” kicks off its second season on Thursday, April 7 at 8:30 p.m., taking the timeslot of “Life in Pieces,” which will have concluded its first season.

New drama “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,” starring Gary Sinise, bows Wednesday, March 2 at 10 p.m., airing behind the original. Current timeslot occupant “Code Black,” which recently had its first season extended to 18 episodes, will conclude on Feb. 24.

CBS still has plenty of programming available to fill holes during the second half of the season. “Mike & Molly” and “2 Broke Girls” both having additional episodes that could air in one of the Thursday slots or perhaps Monday at 8 when “Super Girl” finishes its season. The Eye earlier on Monday announced that it has ordered seven additional episodes of the superhero drama, bringing its first-season episode total to 20.

Also unscheduled are veteran drama “Person of Interest” and new hourlong “Rush Hour.”
