'Carrie Diaries' EP Says the Show Has to 'Earn' Its Sex Storylines
Clearly, the television landscape has changed when it comes to teen sex. And one would think that The CW (already known for pushing the envelope with "Gossip Girl," "The Vampire Diaries," and "90210") would be pretty thoroughly OK with the racy stuff.
But, as The CW's "The Carrie Diaries" approaches its season finale on Monday – the prom episode, wink, wink – the series creator says that the network wants to make sure that the show's sex feels warranted.
"I feel like the great thing about this network is they've always said, 'If you're going to do something outrageous or you're going to do something in a slightly more provocative way, don't do it for shock value, earn it,'" show creator Amy B. Harris tells TheWrap.

While last week's penultimate episode of the season was all about first times, Monday's season-ender finds its teen characters actually approaching those moments: losing one's virginity, discovering the consequences of sexual promiscuity and coming to terms with being gay.
"[The network] just wants us to be authentic," Harris says. "And, there are very few places where you can do an hour character-driven show. And, they've been great and so supportive and it has been incredible."
So, what can fans expect from Monday's finale? Here are some hints from Harris. (Warning: spoilers.)
After the big breakup: The finale picks up a few weeks after the action of last week's episode and the breakup of Sebastian (Austin Butler) and Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb).
"I think they're at a surprising place at the end of that breakup," said Harris. "I think the earlier episodes where they broke up and he found out about the teacher, there was a lot of anger and a kind of 'lets back away from each other.' This one is just sad for both of them."
Did Dorrit (Stefania Owen) lose her virginity on the last episode? Nope, says the show boss. "We made it clear ... in the sound mix, that they're just sort of laughing and talking, and that journey is for another episode."
What's in store for Walt's (Brendan Dooling) coming out story? "Walt is going to be forced to face his choices a lot sooner than he wanted to," the former "Sex and the City" producer says. "And it's going to have some pretty dramatic effects on everybody when it happens… Next year will be their senior year, although Walt will be turning 18 in the summer. Walt will be seeing Bennett again. It starts to reveal in a way that is too fast for Walt."
How will Maggie (Katie Findlay) deal with her ex being gay? Apparently, she doesn't welcome it with open arms. "Well, I think Maggie would be someone who would be shocked to see that Walt was gay," Harris says.
"The Carrie Diaries" season finale airs Monday at 8/7c on The CW.
