Bill Maher and Stephen Colbert Duke It Out (Verbally) Over Religion & Politics

On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert opened his interview with Bill Maher by saying, “Bill, they say at a dinner party you should never talk about sex, politics, or religion. Have you ever been invited to a dinner party in your life?” It proved the perfect opener for his outspoken guest, and the two jumped right into socially taboo topics.

Colbert, a practicing Catholic, invited Maher, a decided atheist, back to the church, to which Maher replied, “There are things in the universe I don’t understand. But my response to that is not to make up silly stories.”

When the conversation shifted sharply toward politics, buttons were pushed. Maher admitted he changed his stance on how long the election cycle should be, saying that if America had two-month election cycles like Britain, “they would’ve already elected Trump already.” The pair smiled through gritted teeth, and although tempers flared, there were a lot of punch lines and laughs between them.

On a lighter note, remember when Colbert had all those funny ideas on how to make light of that Starbucks holiday cup “controversy”?

The Late Show airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
