It's the moment your middle school — or high school! — self has been waiting for: Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 will hold its much-hyped Dawson's Creek reunion in its season premiere. But before you get too excited, this is not the Creek reunion you imagined.

Exclusive: Dawson's Creek reunion on Apartment 23! Busy Philipps to guest-star

When Apartment 23 returns Tuesday (9:30/8:30c, ABC), the upcoming anniversary of Dawson's Creek's swan song is on the horizon, and James receives his annual letter from Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams begging him to do a reunion special. "James loves being able to say no to the reunion," James Van Der Beek tells TVGuide.com. "It really makes him feel big and powerful to say no to Oscar winners and other successful actors. Then, June [Dreama Walker] gets to James and convinces him that a Dawson's Creek reunion actually needs to happen, and so he starts contemplating what that would look like and what that would mean for him, his career and his legacy."

While James considers the reunion, the group is split. June is enthusiastic to relive her high school heyday. "There's definitely a part of her that loves that time in her life," Walker says. "When she had a big crush on James and the biggest problem she had was what she was going to wear to school tomorrow."

But the show's titular Queen B (Krysten Ritter) would rather steer James away from what she sees as an unnecessary catastrophe. "In real life, too, I'm like, 'What do we need to do a Dawson's Creek reunion for?' Chloe has a similar reaction," Ritter says. "She loves James and wants him to move forward with his life. He doesn't need to do a Dawson's Creek reunion."

James' attempts at a reunion will not go over well; In fact, it culminates with the charred remains of a rowboat. But the debacle will help to teach James a lesson. "James realizes some things about his life, past and future, by trying to do this reunion," creator Nahnatchka Khan adds. "It takes an unexpected turn." Which is where Saved by the Bell's Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz will come in.

But it's a cameo made by The Beek's former Creek co-star Busy Philipps that lends the most comedy in the premiere. "It was so much fun," Van Der Beek says of having Philipps on Apartment 23. "It was fun to reminisce and laugh about where we were and what we thought we knew at the time when we were on that show, especially me. She told me some things I said that I couldn't believe I'd said. I was like, 'Wow, I guess I've grown up a little bit.'"

And although The Beek enjoyed reuniting with his co-star, he was the most grateful for one other Creek-related thing: "I never heard the [theme] song, and nobody sang it to me. God bless them."

Now that the song is stuck in your head, stay tuned for more scoop on what's in store for this season of Apartment 23, which kicks off Tuesday at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
