An Alabama high school football coach has been suspended for 10 days without pay for making anti-gay remarks and derogatory comments about First Lady Michelle Obama during a class, The Times Daily reports.
A student taped coach Bob Grisham's class discussion on Jan. 27 in which he referred to FLOTUS as "fat butt Michelle Obama." He also voiced his views against gays, saying, "I don't believe in queers. I don't like queers. I don't hate them as much a person, but what they do is wrong and an abomination against God."
Grisham said last week that the comments were made in a debate-style situation and that he misspoke. In addition to his suspension from coaching, Grisham cannot teach his fifth-period psychology class for the rest of the school year. During that time, he will be assigned other academic duties and must attend sensitivity training.
After Grisham's suspension was announced, Lauderdale County Superintendent Jennifer Gray released a written statement that she and the school board were "profoundly disappointed in the actions and statements of Mr. Grisham. ... The board has taken actions specifically calculated to prevent such actions and statements from being made again."
