'Dancing With the Stars' Week 3 Recap: Kellie Pickler Is Crowned Queen of Prom Night
Monday night's "Dancing With the Stars" was all about big hair and formalwear, as the long-running TV dancing competition hosted its first-ever prom night. (And no, it wasn't an April Fools' joke!) The Week 3 festivities featured some really strange song picks (it's prom night, so that means it's time for wholesome, high school tunes like Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and James Brown's "Sex Machine"), and some even stranger outfits (Sean Lowe's denim overalls and tank top combo was far from formalwear). It was a premiere prom for several of this season's stars and pro dancers: The English-bred Mark Ballas and Lisa Vanderpump never had a prom, and Zendaya isn't even old enough to go to one!
So what happened when the stars mixed corsages with the cha-cha? Check out who topped the leaderboard on Monday night and, more importantly, who was named prom queen.
A leaderboard shakeup had the usually flawless Zendaya Coleman losing her top spot to "American Idol" alum Kellie Pickler, despite a beautiful Viennese waltz that paid tribute to her grandmother's 1957 prom. The dance was near perfection until a slight stumble at the end, but it was enough for the "Shake It Up" star to lose the top billing for the week.
Kellie was footloose and fancy-free with partner Derek Hough as they danced a jive to the song "Footloose." Judge Bruno Tonioli called the dapper duo "sharper than a samurai sword," while Judge Len Goodman told the country music star, "You are officially the queen of the prom!" They scored the night's high of 25 points.
Former Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman told TV Guide her lilac "DWTS" prom dress was different from her real-life, chocolate brown prom dress: "I don't really like bright colors, so that's why I did it. It was kind of a jersey material. I'm not a typical prom girl," she said.
For her TV prom with Mark, the pair danced an elegant and romantic Viennese waltz. But not all of the judges were impressed. Len started things off on a sour note: "Up until tonight I've been really impressed with your dancing," he told Aly. "Not so much tonight." Then he added, "April Fools!" (That was mean, Len!)
Andy Dick's cha-cha rehearsals weren't exactly romantic -- at one point the frustrated comedian threatened to rip partner Sharna Burgess's head off -- and the judges' critiques were harsh after his semi-shirtless dance, which also featured Sharna in a black leather catsuit. "Any connection to the cha-cha was a coincidence," Len said, although he conceded the dance was entertaining. (Fun fact: Andy was voted homecoming king at his high school. Who knew?)
"General Hospital" star Ingo Rademache hopped on a motorcycle and stole the prom queen (his partner, Kym Johnson) during their paso doble. They scored 21 points and mixed reviews from the judges. Bruno told the soap star, "You're supposed to be a matador, not an ax murderer!"
Lisa and her hunky pro partner, Gleb Savchenko, scored 21 points for their Viennese waltz, along with a slew of Twitter followers after posting pictures of a shirtless Gleb. The judges did warn the reality star restaurateur that she has to work on staying in character during her dances.
