Ryan Lochte Charged With Making False Police Report In Rio After Landing New Endorsement Deal

UPDATE with Brazil charges: Police in Rio de Janeiro have charged U.S swimmer Ryan Lochte with filing a false report in connection with his now self-described “embellished” story of a robbery near the end of the Rio Summer Olympics.

The Associated Press reported the news just now amid earlier reports by Fox News and ESPN that Rio officials planned to summon Lochte back to Rio de Janeiro for a Brazil Justice Department hearing on the incident, in which he and three other U.S. swimmers were accused of vandalizing a gas station bathroom after a night of drinking.

In the wake of the scandal, Lochte lost several brand endorsement deals. Today he got one back: Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops, a Carmel, CA-based cough lozenge company, said it has signed the multi-gold-medal winner.

“Just as Pine Bros. is forgiving to your throat, the company asks [the] public for a little forgiveness for an American swimming legend,” the company said in announcing the deal Thursday, according to CNN.

In the wake of the scandal that became the talk of the Games — and included several interviews with Olympics broadcaster NBC over several days — Lochte lost deals with Speedo, Ralph Lauren, the company that makes Gentle Hair Removal, and mattress outfit Airweave.

The swimmers originally said they were held up at gunpoint during the incident, prompting a police investigation that revealed multiple inconsistencies in those accounts.
