‘Roots’ Returns With Powerful Performances
It’s been nearly 40 years since Roots first aired, and this week the legendary miniseries has been remade with a new cast but the same emotional, hard-to-watch scenes of Kunta Kinte’s struggle to be a free man. Malachi Kirby, the young man who has taken over the role of Kunta, did an amazing job capturing the raw pain and anger that LeVar Burton portrayed back in 1977. Burton is now an executive producer on the remake and even made a brief cameo.
But Kirby wasn’t the only actor taking on a legendary role. The original miniseries won nine Emmy Awards including Best Actor in a Drama or Comedy, Single Appearance for Louis Gossett Jr.’s role of Fiddler, which is now being played by Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker.

Roots airs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 9 p.m. on A&E, History, and Lifetime.
