Role Recall: Carol Kane Looks Back on ‘Taxi,’ ‘The Princess Bride,’ and More

It’s not like you need any help recalling the many and varied roles of Carol Kane. The instantly recognizable actress has appeared in such classic films and TV shows as Annie Hall, Taxi, and The Princess Bride, and she is currently cracking binge viewers up on the Netflix comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Kane revisited some of her most memorable screen moments with us in Yahoo TV’s latest Role Recall — from the inappropriate laughing fits she experienced on the set of Dog Day Afternoon to becoming fluent in a fake language created by Andy Kaufman for Taxi.

Some of Kane’s most enjoyable roles were also her least expected. For example, after playing Richard Belzer’s “crazy ex-wife” on the acclaimed NBC cop drama, Homicide: Life on the Street in 1997, she reprised the role over a decade later on Law & Order: SVU. And she never had any idea that she’d find her way into the comic book realm, playing the mother of the Penguin on Fox’s pre-Batman series, Gotham. “The director did not shy away from that being… a little bit odd,” Kane says of the too-close bond Mama Cobblepot shares with her son.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is currently streaming on Netflix; Gotham airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
