Robert Durst: I Was on Meth While Filming HBO Docuseries The Jinx

The odd tale of Robert Durst, eccentric real estate scion and accused murderer, keeps getting odder.

In recently released court papers, Durst tells prosecutors that he was under the influence of methamphetamines while filming his part in HBO’s 2015 documentary series The Jinx: The Lives and Deaths of Robert Durst, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Durst was the subject of the project, which chronicled a years-long investigation of his suspected involvement in the deaths of his first wife, Kathleen, who disappeared in 1982; as well as that of friend Susan Berman and two other possible murders. In The Jinx‘s finale, Durst seems to incriminate himself by continuing to talk after the cameras have stopped rolling… but his microphone is still on.

“There it is. You’re caught. You’re right, of course. But, you can’t imagine. Arrest him,” Durst rambles before saying, “What the hell did I do?” he wonders aloud. “Killed them all, of course.”

During their investigation, series’ producers contacted law-enforcement officials with new evidence; the day before the finale aired, Durst was arrested on charges of first-degree murder for Berman’s 2000 execution-style killing. He has pleaded not guilty and now is waiting for his trial to begin.

Los Angeles prosecutors interviewed Durst for three hours in March 2015. Friday, a transcript of that interview was made public. During the conversation, Durst claims he was high on meth “the whole time” that he was involved with The Jinx production, adding “It should have been obvious.”

He also added that he did not try to leave the country after The Jinx aired because ““I just didn’t really, really, really think that I was gonna end up arrested.”
