Rob Riggle, Famke Janssen, Wendi McLendon-Covey & More Round Out ‘Status Update’ Cast
Rob Riggle, Famke Janssen, John Michael Higgins, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Josh Ostrovsky (aka “The Fat Jew”) have boarded Scott Speer’s teen comedy Status Update which is now in production in Vancouver.
The film, written by 17 Again scribe Jason Filardi, is billed as Big for the millennial generation and follows a high school kid, Kyle (Ross Lynch), who after being uprooted by the separation of his parents (Riggle and McLendon-Covey) meets a foulmouthed mystical bearded guy (Ostrovsky) who gives him a magical app that causes his social media updates to come true. As Kyle elevates to hero status at his new high school, his newfound powers abruptly backfire, sending him crashing back to earth.
Status Update also stars Olivia Holt, Courtney Eaton, Diana Bang, Martin Donovan, Harvey Guillen, Gregg Sulkin and Brec Bassinger.
Offspring Entertainment partners Jennifer Gibgot and Adam Shankman are producing with Voltage’s Dominic Rustam and Brightlight’s Shawn Williamson. DNA Pictures’ Mason Xu and Fan Dong will executive produce alongside Brightlight’s Arielle Boisvert and Voltage’s Jonathan Deckter.
Status Update is the second film to go into production under Brightlight’s three-year, five-picture production and distribution deal with Voltage, after Colossal starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis which shot last fall. DNA Pictures and its partner Heyi Capital are co-financing the picture and will handle distribution rights for Greater China, as well as Chinese remake rights. UTA is repping domestic rights.
Riggle is repped by WME and Principato-Young, Janssen by ICM Partners and Brookside Artist Management, Higgins by UTA, McLendon-Covey by UTA and manager Gladys Gonzalez, and Ostrovsky by CAA and Underground.
