‘Rizzoli & Isles’ To End After 7 Seasons

TNT’s flagship drama Rizzoli & Isles will end its run with the upcoming 13-episode seventh season, the network’s president Kevin Reilly said at TCA today.

“We felt it was time,” he said. “Everybody felt good about it.” He would not elaborate whether the decision had something to do with stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander, who went through a difficult salary renegotiations two years ago. “Both ladies felt comfortable (about the decision), I think both Angie and Sasha had a satisfying experience; it’s had a good run,” Reilly said.

Still, ending one of the most watched series on TNT is somewhat surprising. While the network is heading into edgier, more serialized territory with its new shows, Reilly acknowledged they are happy with the large audiences series like procedural Major Crimes and action-adventure The Librarians bring.

Rizzoli & Isles,

toplined by Harmon and Alexander, launched as part of TNT’s previous strategy that focused on crime procedurals to complement the network’s well performing off-network acquisitions like Law & Order. It was a breakout hit and remains a top performer for the network. Overall, the sixth season of Rizzoli & Isles reached an average of over 11 million viewers per episode across TNT’s on-demand, digital and mobile platforms.
