'Rick and Morty' Creators Improvise Whacked Out Commercials

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, the creative geniuses behind Rick and Morty — one of the weirdest shows to come to Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim in a while (and that’s quite a feat) — love to riff loose jokes and concepts for their freewheeling animated show. In a fan favorite episode called “Rixty Minutes,” the titular twosome flip the channel through a series of improvised commercials for awful companies, so Yahoo TV put them to the test to act as pitchmen for a couple of our own bad business ideas.

“Welcome to the Old Mayonnaise Emporium! Don’t worry about regular, fresh mayonnaise; our mayonnaise is aged in these jars,” shouts Roiland in his signature squeal of delight. The pair use this example to explain the process of how they turn long takes of mostly nonsense into tight, punchy jokes with the magic of editing.

Harmon giggles with glee as Roiland plays Big Bad Bill of the House of Barking Dogs and Chainsaws and insists to “Fuhgeddaboutit” when a parent worries that these dogs will bite your children. The two know how to make each other laugh first and foremost, but their fans are surely loving every minute of it as well.

Rick and Morty Season 2 premieres Sunday, July 26 at 11:30 p.m. on Adult Swim.
