RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Ticks Up, ‘Supernatural’ Returns Higher
We may be reaching the bottom of the traditional post-premiere decline for new series. Last night, Fox‘s Brooklyn Nine-Nine became the first new series this fall to post week-to-week gains with a 1.5 in adults 18-49, up 7%. The entire Fox comedy block was up 7% vs. last Tuesday, paced by New Girl (2.1), with freshman Dads (1.3) flat and The Mindy Project (1.4) down 7%. Since Fox’s Tuesday lineup is ahead by a week (it launched on September 17), it is plausible that the gains are a sign of the ratings bottoming out that occurs around Week 3-4 of the season. Or it was just an uptick due to lesser competition from NBC’s The Voice, which aired a recap show (2.9) vs. an original.
Can someone blame the CW for moving away from female dramas to boy/genre shows? After those underwhelming 0.4 in 18-49, 1 million viewers and 0.3; 860,000 viewers for Hart Of Dixie and Beauty And The Beast on Monday, the network got cooking with veteran Supernatural last night. In its ninth (!) season premiere, the sci-fi drama logged 2.53 million viewers and a 1.2 in 18-49 for the series’ highest-rated and most watched premiere since 2010. Versus last season’s opener, Supernatural was up 37% in total viewers, up 25% in A18-34 (1.0/3) and up 50% in A18-49. Even The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals did OK, averaging 1.92 million viewers, 0.8/3 A18-34 and 0.9/3 A18-49. That was down only a tenth from the show’s premiere last week, despite opening the night at 8 PM against ABC’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. vs. riding the coattails of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday.
Wondering what a lead-in is worth for a series like Chicago Fire? The NBC firefighter drama, which has flourished airing behind The Voice this fall, posted a 2.2 last night, down 15% from last week. It showed that The Voice adds a hefty premium to Chicago Fire‘s numbers but also that the drama can stand on its own as its lead-in was down 36% week-to-week. Even with a Voice recap, NBC still won the night in 18-49 (2.7)
ABC’s Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2.8) was down 10% from its fast national last week. The Goldbergs (2.0) shed another 9%, while Trophy Wife (1.4) was flat. A Scandal repeat (1.0) was up 43% from last week’s episode of now cancelled Lucky 7.
After the two-part goodbye to popular cast member Cote de Pablo, there was an inevitable letdown for NCIS fans, with the veteran drama (2.8) tumbling 27% week to week. But NCIS: LA (2.6) was down just 4%, followed by Person Of Interest (2.0), which slid 5% to a new series low. CBS was the most watched network by a mile with an average of 14.8 million.
