'Project Runway' fans shocked by botched remembrance of deceased contestant

This week on Project Runway, Tim Gunn sent Michael Brambila to the workroom to clean up his space when his design was given the ax by the judges. After his fellow contestants bid him a fond farewell, Michael cleaned up his space, turned out the lights, and Project Runway put up a memorial card reading “Mychael Knight, 1978-2017. His talent and kindness will be greatly missed on and off the runway.”

Because contestants go by their first names on the show, some fans immediately thought that the newly eliminated Michael had died, and they took to Twitter to voice their concern: “Did Michael die or something? What’s up with putting his name and dates up there?” And, “Wait, Tim Gunn didn’t use his save and then Michael died??? #ActuallyThisIsReallySad.”

And yes, this is really sad, but for a different reason. It was actually Mychael Knight, a contestant from Season 3 who died, not Michael Brambila from this season.

The rumors were quickly put to rest on Twitter and fans took time to scold Project Runway saying, “You don’t send a contestant named ‘Michael’ home and then have an ‘in memory of’ with a similarly spelled name #HeartAttack.”

But regardless of how Project Runway handled the memorial, our hearts go out to Mychael Knight’s friends and family in this difficult time.

Project Runway airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.
