Alfred Hitchcock Presents, "The Final Escape"

1. "The Final Escape," Alfred Hitchcock Presents

An episode that figured in both "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" and the 1985 version of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "The Final Escape" plays into fears about getting buried alive. A prisoner sets up an escape plot with the prison gravedigger, planning to hide in the coffin of the next prisoner who dies, at which time the gravedigger will return to dig him/her up (in the '85 version, the prisoner's a woman). When the death toll is sounded, the escaper climbs into the coffin and awaits the gravedigger. Finally, having waited a very long time, the escaper lights a match -- to see that the "next prisoner who died" was in fact...the gravedigger. Trapped in a coffin with the decaying body of the only person who can help you...shudder.
