Back in the mid-'90s, when independent film was thriving and TV was still playing it safe, it was easy to categorize TV as hopelessly unhip. ("Touched by an Angel" probably had something to do with that.) But now that dozens of cable networks are competing for eyeballs, TV is taking more risks and adopting the unconventional storytelling of indie film.
