PGA Awards: ‘La La Land’ Wins Top Film Prize; ‘Stranger Things’ Lands Drama; ‘Atlanta’ Takes Comedy – Full List
La La Land continued its awards season surge, winning the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures tonight at the 28th Annual PGA Awards. It beat out fellow nominees Lionsgate’s Hacksaw Ridge, Paramount’s Fences and Arrival, Fox’s Deadpool and Hidden Figures, CBS Films’ Hell Or High Water, The Weinstein Company’s Lion, Roadside/Amazon’s Manchester By The Sea and A24’s Moonlight at the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.
Other film winners included O.J. Made in America, which took the Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures and Zootopia, which nabbed the Animated Feature award.
On the TV side, buzzy newcomer Netflix’s Stranger Things took the Outstanding Drama Series Producer award and FX breakout, Donald Glover’s Atlanta, took the comedy series honor. Atlanta is coming off two other awards seasons wins, previously snaring Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe nods. Another O.J. Simpson-focused project took the David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television – critically praised The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
The guild presented its top honor, the 2017 Milestone Award to Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman. In accepting the award, Rothman said one the main axioms that has always led his career: “Talent will always follow material.” He also talked about integrity. To me integrity is everything, your word is your bond” added the studio chief. “The people you deal with need to know that if you said something, you’ll stick by it. That’s what I tried to do for 30 years.” Hugh Jackman introduced Rothman, joined by Rothman’s daughter Elizabeth and Nora.
James L. Brooks paid tribute to the late Mary Tyler Moore when he accepted the Norman Lear Award for Television. ” She had dignity, worth, legs, wit, she was intrinsically valiant, she was the woman who was at the center of the work and who never complained. She made grace contagious,” said Brooks. He also added, “A TV series is the best job that gives you creativity, freedom, continuity. It’s still the place where executives lean forward when someone says ‘I have a crazy idea.’ The best jokes rule, and the script is king.”
Focus Features’ Loving received the Stanley Kramer Award, Irwin Winkler was honored with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award presented by Martin Scorsese and Robert de Niro, and Annapurna producer Megan Ellison received the Visionary Award.
