Penn & Teller Have Fun With Metal Detector

Magicians come on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, but on this week’s show, the Las Vegas duo did some magic that could fool the TSA. They brought up a fully functional metal detector for their act. The detectors work through a process called pulse induction, which means they send out thousands of magnetic impulses every second. Once a pulse bounces off a piece of metal, it triggers the alarm. While it would be a good trick to walk thru the machines without emptying your pockets, Teller did the opposite. He set the alarm off and then magically pulled a metal bowl with fire from inside his jacket, and a full sized, fully functioning extinguisher out of nowhere to put out the fire. For their finale, they did a twist on a classic routine, putting a large blanket in front of the metal detector, and then dropping it to show a Vegas showgirl holding onto a bazooka, without setting off the alarm.
