'Outsiders' Trailer: David Morse Goes Full-On Mountain Man

David Morse goes full mountain man — complete with long hair and bear-like snarl — in the trailer for Outsiders, a rugged rural drama series that premieres on WGN American in 2016. The veteran character actor plays Big Foster, the chief-in-waiting of the Shay Mountain-dwelling Farrell family. (Because they’re semi-feral, get it?) Boasting a lineage that extends back some two centuries, the clan is still looking to preserve its way of life in the face of the ever-encroaching modern civilization.

That encroaching outside world is represented by Sheriff Wade Houghton (Top of the Lake’s Thomas M. Wright), who draws on his years of experience dealing with the scary mountain clan to ease the constant tension between the family and the surrounding community. The rest of the ensemble includes Ryan Hurst as Big Foster’s son, named — what else? — Lil Foster; Phyllis Somerville as Lady Ray, the reigning Queen of their mountain society; and Joe Anderson as Asa, a Farrell who decided to pursue opportunities in the outside world, before ultimately returning home to the family — and they’re not all that eager to welcome him back.
