‘Outlander’ Casts Richard Rankin As Roger Wakefield
Scottish actor Richard Rankin has joined the second season cast of Starz’s Outlander.
He’ll play Roger Wakefield, the grown-up version of Reverend Wakefield’s adorable adopted son introduced in Season 1. After his parents died in World War II, Roger was raised by the Reverend (with help from his housekeeper, Mrs. Graham) and is a proud Scot through and through. Now a professor at Oxford, Roger has a keen interest in history and all the secrets and insight it presents.
Based on Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling books, Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she immediately is thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. Season 2 begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hellbent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart and stopping the battle of Culloden. Ronald D. Moore exec produces.
Rankin starred opposite Bradley Cooper, Uma Thurman and Sienna Miller in John Wells’ Burnt. On the TV side, Rankin most recently appeared in the BBC One drama From Darkness with Anne-Marie Duff, and he next will be seen in BBC miniseries Thirteen. His other television credits include BBC drama The Syndicate and NBC’s American Odyssey.
Season 2 is filming in Scotland for premiere in the spring.
