'The Wire' and Our TV Blind Spots

The Wire is generally regarded by critics as being one of the best shows of this new golden age of television, which started in 1999 with the premiere of its HBO channel-mate The Sopranos. But the drama's many accolades far outnumbered its audience during the course of its five-season run, from 2002 to 2008. To this day, The Wire remains a blind spot for a large number of TV fans. Even here at Yahoo TV, an informal poll of writers revealed that a surprising number of us hadn’t seen David Simon’s made-in-Baltimore masterwork (much to editor-in-chief Kristen Baldwin's chagrin.)

The good news is that it’s easier than ever to binge-watch The Wire, thanks to the just-released Blu-ray boxed set, which includes all 60 episodes, plus some great bonus features. That should allow those of us who haven’t caught up with it yet to finally experience what’s consistently cited as an all-time classic. And then maybe — just maybe — we’ll finally get around to some of our other TV blind spots, which we ‘fess up to in the following gallery.

The Wire: The Complete Series is available from Amazon and the HBO Store.
