Octavia Spencer Talks Being a Third Wheel in Viola Davis’s Hot Tub, Comfortable Fashion at the Globes

Octavia Spencer had a pretty interesting day all around on the day of the Golden Globe Awards, and not just because of her nomination for Hidden Figures. Not only did she start her day being the third wheel in a hot tub, but she ended it giving a little too much information to Best Actor winner Casey Affleck. But what Spencer shared with Affleck might just be the secret to happiness, and while stopping by Ellen on Wednesday, she shared that secret. But first, the hot tub.

Spencer noted that she is neighbors with good friend and fellow nominee Viola Davis. Spencer also mentioned that Davis and her husband spend a lot of time in their hot tub. The day of the awards, Spencer called up Davis and asked if she wanted to get in the hot tub, and, of course, Davis obliged. Spencer, Davis, and Davis’s husband sat in the hot tub before the awards with mimosas and snacks. And nothing makes being a third wheel in a hot tub better than snacks.

And now, to what Spencer discovered may be the secret to happiness. Spencer said that while at the awards, people kept telling her how radiant she looked, and how happy she seemed. Turns out what made her feel that way all came down to what she chose to wear … or rather, what not to wear.

“I chose to wear a tuxedo, and in doing that I was able to be freer. Less underwear,” Spencer said, adding, “I’m not cinched.”

The fact that she was going commando that night was something she kept to herself until she bumped into Affleck. According to Spencer, he told her how radiant she looked and she proceeded to tell him why. Fortunately, there was a picture taken at that exact moment, capturing Affleck throwing his head back laughing and Spencer realizing that maybe she should have just kept that to herself.
