RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘How To Live With Your Parents’ & ‘Modern Family’ Down, ‘American Idol’ Up Slightly, ‘Survivor’ Ties Low

Last night’s American Idol (3.2/9) had the Final 6 contestants doing double duty with a Burt Bacharach and Hal David tune and one they wished they’d written themselves. The two-hour live show saw finalist Candice Glover perform a stunning version of the Cure’s Lovesong, and it saw Lazaro Arbos … well, he didn’t have such a good night. Idol itself on the other hand did have a better night than last Wednesday, when it hit a new low in fast nationals. Last night saw the show up 7% versus April 3’s fast national and up 3% against last week’s 3.1/9 final numbers. We might see that go up even more as Idol is commonly adjusted upward in final numbers. Idol pulled in an audience of 11.98 million last night, a 4% gain, to become Wednesday’s most-watched show. CBS’ Criminal Minds was second with 11.29 million viewers. Fox won the night in total viewers and the adults 18-49 demo.

On CBS, Survivor: Caramoan (2.4/8) saw things whittled to just three members of the Fans tribe. It also saw Survivor dip 4% from last week’s final numbers to tie a series low. Criminal Minds (3.0/8) bopped up 7% from its April 3 show, and CSI (2.4/7) saw a solid 14% push upward from last week.

The second week of ABC’s new How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life) (2.5/7) saw the comedy drop. The midseason show fell 14% from its April 3 premiere. Part of that may have been because its Modern Family (3.8/10) lead-in was down 10% from its April 3 episode. However, as it has for the past several weeks, Modern Family again beat Idol in the 18-49 demo. ABC started primetime with The Middle (2.0/6), which was even with last week, and Suburgatory (1.7/5), which dipped 6% from April 3. Nashville (1.8/5) ended the night, with the country drama up 6% from last week.

The only thing new on NBC last night was Dateline (1.2/4) at 8 PM. Head-to-head with the first hour of Idol, the newsmagazine was down 14% from its April 3 episode. Otherwise it was a Law & Order: SVU (1.0/3) repeat at 9 PM and an encore of last week’s Hannibal (0.9/3) premiere at 10 PM.

The CW ran repeats of Arrow (0.4/1) and Supernatural (0.4/1).
