All week, Today has been featuring a “Where Are They Now?” series on some of the biggest talk show hosts of the past … or in this case, the present. That’s because the guest on Thursday was Maury Povich, whose show, Maury, is still on the air after 26 years. Much like Jerry Springer, Maury is known mostly for having outrageous guests. In recent years, though, it seems that more than anything else we see Povich telling a young man he is or is not the father of a baby. On Today, Povich was asked what has been the craziest moment on his show.
Povich said it was when a woman was on accusing a man of being the father of her twins. But before going any further, Povich wanted to make sure the audience knew that he didn’t know the answer, and he wouldn’t until he opened an envelope — something he’s done since the beginning of the show.
“I open up the envelope, and he’s the father of one, but not the other. And that was impossible to me at the time, until my staff told me that with fraternal twins, you can have two fathers. It’s a million-to-one shot, [but] it’s happened twice on my show,” Povich said.
Povich also made a comparison of his guests — who are usually there for a DNA or lie-detector test, or he or she is a troubled teen — with the politicians and entertainers usually covered by Today.
“I think my people are tame next to the people you cover every day,” he observed. “Think about that. We could bring lie-detector tests for the people you have to cover every day.”
