A man was tackled by police in Rockefeller Plaza Thursday morning after he began waving a knife around outside the Today show, NBC reports.
The incident prompted the morning show to open its 8:00 hour inside the studio rather than outside on the plaza, as it typically does.
The man, whose identity has not been released, made it clear that he was only intending to harm himself and not any of the surrounding spectators, co-anchor Matt Lauer told viewers. The man succeeded in stabbing himself and was being "attended to by medical personnel," according to Lauer.
"All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks to our security team and the NYPD," he later tweeted, adding that the man was in police custody.
