With a week to go before a winner is crowned on "Dancing With the Stars," Monday night's episode was an emotional one and it included an injury that could impact the outcome of the competition.
Katherine Jenkins, a standout since early in the season, seemed to lose her footing at the end of her second dance, a salsa routine, then burst into tears. While the trip up didn't drastically impact her scores — she and Mark Ballas got three nines – she was immediately taken to get "medical attention" when the show was over.
Later, Jenkins shared an update with her Twitter followers, writing: "Thank you for all your concerned tweets... I'm with the Doctor, he says it was a reflectorical spasm in my lower back." Her partner, Mark Ballas, telling E!, "I watched it back and it looks like it was a mixture of her foot slip and her back kind of tweaked when she tried to fix it and I was in the air when this happened. So it's like being in a butterfly vertical over your partner and you see terror in her face. Time stood still for a second and I had to find a way to get underneath her and stand her back up. It's scary when those things happen."
Meanwhile, Maria Menounos also had an emotional outburst of her own. During the rehearsals, Menounos gave her partner Derek Hough a pep talk when he was having a hard time coming up with another fresh routine. So after they finished the performance, she was very emotional with tears in her eyes and a shaky voice. But when they nabbed a perfect score for their dancing, Menounos was so excited she climbed up on a bench and started shrieking: "Oh my god!" Hough laughed as she did it and host Tom Bergeron joked: "I think Maria almost ripped apart the sky box! That would have been bad."
For the night, Hough and Menounos had the best score with 59/60, followed by William Levy and Cheryl Burke 58/60 (who also pulled in a perfect score), Donald Driver and Peta Murgotroyd 57/60 and Jenkins and Ballas trailing behind with 56/60.The finale airs May 22.
