Netflix Enables Program Downloading For Subscribers Worldwide
Starting today Netflix subscribers won’t have to leave its programming behind when a broadband connection is out of reach. The streaming video company has begun to allow customers to download offerings including Orange is The New Black, Narcos, and The Crown, Director of Product Innovation Eddy Wu says in a blog post.
There’s no additional cost to download, and it’s available on all plans worldwide. Videos will play on Android and iOS devices.
“While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we’ve often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where Internet is expensive or limited,” Wu says. “Just click the download button on the details page for a film or TV series and you can watch it later without an internet connection.”
He adds that “many” movies and series are available now with “more on the way.”
CEO Reed Hastings told analysts in October that downloading was “something we’re looking at,” but declined to offer any details. It’s seen as an especially attractive feature for many overseas markets where subscribers can’t depend on a consistently strong internet connection.
Netflix shares are up 1.9% in early trading.
