Neil Gorsuch Given a Lobster on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Trump announced in January his Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch, which John Oliver had some issues with on Last Week Tonight. After taking shots at how “aggressively caucasian” Gorsuch is, Oliver went on to say that he thinks Republicans basically stole this seat, because Merrick Garland, who former President Barack Obama nominated 11 months ago, wasn’t even given a hearing due to a Republican filibuster. And this doesn’t just affect the United States, it also affects John Oliver.

Oliver has an all-dog court to reenact oral arguments since cameras are not allowed in the courtroom. When Garland was nominated, Oliver held a vote to choose his dog, and the people chose Mollie. Sadly, she never got to serve, not unlike the actual Merrick Garland.

Faced with having to vote for a new dog to represent Gorsuch, Oliver had another idea. To reflect the fact that he thinks Gorsuch’s nomination is a historical aberration, Oliver decided that Gorsuch is getting a lobster. And although the lobster will represent the blight that is Gorsuch, we were also given some pretty sweet options: Cindy Clawford, Pinchers Von Shellington III, and finally, Mike.

Though every choice might sound delicious in one way or another, Oliver had some final thoughts on just how much your vote counts, because it is a lifetime appointment, and lobsters can apparently live to be up to 100 years old.

Last Week Tonight airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
