Your Burning 'Bachelor' Wine Questions, Answered

Happy National Drink Wine Day, rose lovers! Yes, this is a real day, celebrated every Feb. 18 to “help spread the love and health benefits of wine.” When I heard about this important day, my thoughts turned — as they usually do — to The Bachelor. After all, is there a show on television that relies more heavily on the “health benefits” of wine more than ABC’s long-running dating franchise? Basically from the moment the contestants set foot into Casa Bachelor, they’re surrounded by wine of all kinds — and the vino just keeps flowing all season long, through one-on-one dates, post-group date cocktail parties, and awkward two-on-one dates. Wine is what makes the Bachelor or Bachelorette’s “journey” to find “love” possible, people! So in honor of National Drink Wine Day, we posed all of our burning wine-related questions to a representative of Team Bachelor, and here’s what we found out.

What type of wine is served at Casa Bachelor?
Lots of brands, though definitely a lot of local California and Pacific Northwest wines like Saarloos and Sons, Carhartt and Scarecrow. Fun fact: Production will occasionally make their own stick-on labels to place on the wine bottles, with names of producers or staff members featured prominently. So if you look closely, you might notice something like “Pete’s Pinot Noir.”

[Contestants] drink a lot of white because it doesn’t stain your teeth — probably 65 percent white.

How many bottles does the show go through on the first night?
Bachelor seasons go through a lot more wine than Bachelorette seasons. The men drink more red than the women, though. Both types are available to men and women. The women are far more concerned about their pearly whites than the men — white wine only for them. The guys care more about what they eat than the women, however. It’s all egg whites and chicken breasts and protein powder… but that’s another article altogether.

How much wine is consumed during the pre-rose ceremony cocktail parties?
It’s hard to put a number on the amount of wine we go through. I’d say a small pond’s worth.

Is it pour-your-own, or is there a bartender?
We have a rotating group of bartenders who range in experience — but they sure have stories to tell!

Is it us, or have the wine glasses gotten bigger this season on The Bachelor?
Haven’t noticed that the wine glasses have gotten bigger. You know what they say: The TV adds a couple ounces.

The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
