‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ Star’s Embarrassing Dinner With the Golden Girls

My Big Fat Greek Wedding may be the highest-grossing romantic comedy ever, but before that, it was just Nia Vardalos performing it onstage. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she shared a story about the time The Golden Girls star Rue McClanahan invited her over for dinner after seeing her perform.

Vardalos and her husband arrived at McClanahan’s house, but before she had a chance to join the party, which included Estelle Getty and Susan Rutan, she was whisked away to the kitchen by McClanahan’s assistant. Once in the kitchen, Vardalos was given all the ingredients to make a Greek dinner for the guests. Since she didn’t know what else to do, she just cooked.

Apparently no one at the party spoke to Vardalos or her husband until she said she was leaving — at which point McClanahan asked her to give Getty a ride home. On the way, Getty asked Vardalos if she was a chef.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
