‘Mr. Robot’ Gives Viewers ’80s/’90s Nostalgia Trip in a Totally Unexpected Way

Spoilers ahead.

Mr. Robot aired one of its best episodes of Season 2, and it started in a way not too many could have expected. Eschewing its usual visual style, it instead donned the look, feel, and acting of a sitcom from the ’80s and ’90s. The show even used USA’s graphics from that era and had a special opening credits sequence. It was a lot like Full House, Family Matters, or Alf. In fact, it was so much like Alf that Alf himself was there.

Despite all the trappings of a heartwarming sitcom, this nostalgia trip actually had a lot of chilling moments, including Elliot’s mother putting out a cigarette on Darlene’s arm. We finally saw Tyrell Wellick, who was kept in the trunk of the family car for most of the episode. It’s possible that the show was hinting at what happened to the Season 1 antagonist when Elliot’s father hit him hard and drew blood.

The “fun” times ended when Elliot finally snapped out of it, waking up in a hospital room.
