‘Mother May I Sleep With Danger?’ Trailer: Behold James Franco’s Lesbian Vampire Drama
It’s important to note that while James Franco’s completely inexplicable reboot of the 1996 Lifetime film Mother May I Sleep With Danger? is many things, parody is not one of them. Just as Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig’s 2015 thriller A Deadly Adoption was short on laughs and long on slavish devotion to the Lifetime-movie form, from the looks of the first trailer, Mother May I… is taking a straightforward approach — that is, as straightforward as you can get with a teenage lesbian vampire drama featuring James Franco.

The original Mother May I… starred Tori Spelling as a naive young woman who falls in love with a violent jerk (Ivan Sergei). Both stars appear in Franco’s new film — but that’s where the similarities end. Leila George stars as Leah, a theater major who falls in love with a mysterious girl named Pearl (Emily Meade) — but Leah’s mom (Spelling) simply can’t shake the feeling that her daughter’s girlfriend is very bad news. Good hunch, mom! Now go save your daughter from that sexy vampire.
Mother May I Sleep With Danger? premieres Saturday, June 18 at 8 p.m. on Lifetime. The original Mother May I… will air Friday, June 17 at 8 p.m. on LMN.
