‘Mom’ Team Skipping Emmy Campaign, Donating $250K to Planned Parenthood Instead

With nomination voting for the Emmys beginning next month, networks, studios and stars are beginning to think about their annual For Your Consideration campaigns. This year, though, the team behind one series is using the resources they normally put into an Emmy push for an entirely different cause: Planned Parenthood.

Today Allison Janney, the Emmy-winning star of CBS’s comedy Mom, and Chuck Lorre, the show’s creator, announced on CBS This Morning that in lieu of spending money on an Emmy “For Your Consideration” campaign, the creative team behind Mom will make a $250,000 dollar donation to support Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles affiliate. (The move is in response to recent legislation that would deny family planning money to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide abortions.) “It just seemed like a better way to put that money to work,” Lorre explained on CBS This Morning.

Janney, whose mother used to work for Planned Parenthood, has been a longtime supporter of the group. “It makes sense, because our show is all about women,” Janney told the CBS This Morning hosts. “And Planned Parenthood is such an important organization that helps give health services to millions of women and families.” In a statement, Sue Dunlap, President/CEO of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, said, “Generous support from our community fuels [our] work, and we are honored that the team behind Mom is launching this campaign at this critical time.”

Mom returns for Season 5 this fall on CBS.
