Miley Cyrus Debuts 'Malibu' at 2017 Billboard Music Awards — Watch

Miley Cyrus looked free as a bird catching the wind on Sunday as she performed her new single “Malibu” at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.

Wearing a white flow-y top and matching denim shorts, Cyrus crooned her latest hit while images from the music video — ocean waves, colorful balloons, etc. — played behind her. It was a considerably tamer performance than what we’re used to seeing from Cyrus; in fact, it was easily the most subdued performance of the night. (Not that we’re complaining. Cyrus putting substance ahead of style allowed her vocals to shine.)

It should also be noted that Cyrus was introduced by sister Noah and father Bill Ray — and things got was super weird. Following a bit of awkward banter, an erratic Noah finally declared, “For the first time in years with pants on, my sister, Miley Cyrus!”

The first single off Cyrus’ upcoming sixth studio album, “Malibu” is a noteworthy departure from the electronic sound fans have come to expect from the songstress in recent years. Critics note that Cyrus’ lighter vibe is likely related to changes being made in her personal life, including reuniting with fiancé Liam Hemsworth — about whom the song is written.

Though Cyrus was not nominated for any BBMAs this year, she took home two in 2014 — one for Top Streaming Artist and one for Top Streaming Song (“Wrecking Ball.”) She has received nine total nominations.
