Michael Shannon and Chris Hemsworth are saddling up for the Afghanistan war story Horse Soldiers.

The true story follows U.S. Special Forces who are deployed to the mountainous regions of Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11 to flush out the Taliban ... on horseback.

The project is an adaptation of Doug Stanton's book of the same name, which was adapted by Peter Craig and Ted Tally.

Black Label Media is co-financing with Jerry Bruckheimer and his Jerry Bruckheimer Films banner. Black Label's Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill will produce, with Bruckheimer's Chad Oman executive producing.

Hemsworth is currently filming Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok and is set to appear in the next Star Trek movie as Captain Kirk's father. He is repped by CAA, Australia's Morrissey, ROAR and Gang Tyre.

Shannon will next be seen in two festival stand-outs - Jeff Nichols' Loving and Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals. He is repped by CAA, Wetzel and Morris Yorn.
