Michael Phelps Reacts to New Wheaties Box, Ryan Lochte Controversy on ‘Today’

Michael Phelps appeared on Today on Monday, and co-hosts Savannah Guthrie and Carson Daly were excited to unveil the new Wheaties box bearing his image. This is the third time he’s received this honor, but this particular Wheaties box is unlike any that have come before. This is the first ever Lifetime Achievement Wheaties box, celebrating Phelps’s record 28 Olympic medals.

“The greatest athletes in the world have been able to be on the box of Wheaties, and to be able to have the first Lifetime Achievement box, the career just keeps getting better and better,” said Phelps after seeing the box for the first time.

The interview, of course, turned to fellow Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, who made international headlines when he lied about being robbed at gunpoint while in Rio de Janeiro. Phelps was supportive of Lochte and said that it’s hard to watch his friend and longtime teammate go through a difficult time like this, comparing it to the media scrutiny he’s faced on multiple occasions, twice for DUI arrests and once when he was caught smoking marijuana at a college party in 2008. Phelps said he’s reached out to Lochte and that he expects his friend will learn from this ordeal.
