Melissa Rivers Describes ‘Surreal’ Scene Surrounding Joan’s Passing

Today is previewing Matt Lauer’s upcoming interview with Melissa Rivers. Rivers will be discussing the death of her mother, legendary comic and actress Joan Rivers. Rivers died at the age of 81, a week after what should have been a minor endoscopic procedure went wrong. Rivers described to Lauer what it felt like upon arriving on the scene, “I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It becomes very surreal, I had gotten emails on the plane. That she was already in a medically induced coma. And they were dropping her body temperature, which I knew was bad because that is the protocol for catastrophic brain injury.”

Regarding her mother’s passing, Today’s website quotes Melissa Rivers saying, “In my opinion, it was 100 percent preventable.” And when Lauer asked Rivers what could have been done to prevent this outcome, she replied, “How about paying attention to the vital signs? How about having a properly equipped crash cart?”

Matt Lauer’s full interview with Melissa Rivers airs on Monday, May 4.
