First dates are famous for uncomfortable moments — even for celebrities. Megyn Kelly, the Fox News personality and Donald Trump foe, has been there.

Kelly, 45, attended Monday’s Met Gala with her second husband, Douglas Brunt. While they looked picture perfect in their coordinated ensembles, the former Internet security executive, who is now a novelist, told the website Humans of New York that things weren’t always smooth sailing.

“We started dating shortly after she acquired a stalker — bad start, I know,” Brunt, 44, said. “So she had security with her 24/7. Our first date went great. It was the kind of night that was clearly going to end with a kiss. But I had to kiss her in front of the security guards. It was awkward. It was like our parents were watching.”

Needless to say, things turned around for the pair, who have three children.

“The next morning she knocked on my hotel room door,” he continued. “She was alone. She walked into the room, and said: ‘I can do better.’”

A bad first kiss wasn’t the only bump in the road as they got to know each other. A write-up about their 2008 wedding in the New York Times included several stories about relationship woes.

After their first date, which was actually a blind date to which she asked two friends to vet him before she showed up, Kelly felt Brunt often seemed standoffish. He said it was because “he wasn’t used to dating someone in public life.” A friend of Kelly’s told the paper, “It took Megyn a while to realize that Doug was exactly what she wanted.”

Then he almost killed her dog — and, as it would turn out, that brought them together.

On New Year’s Eve, Mr. Brunt and Ms. Kelly were in Washington walking her two Shih Tzus when Mr. Brunt lost control of the leash tethered to Bailey. The dog narrowly missed being hit by a car.

“I apologized,” Mr. Brunt recalled. But Ms. Kelly couldn’t let it go and accused him of trying to kill the dog. By midnight, they’d broken up. “We both knew that we hadn’t really been fighting about Bailey, but about our future,” Ms. Kelly later said.

Mr. Brunt spent a sleepless night on the couch. He woke to the sight of Ms. Kelly writing in her journal. He walked toward her and, guessing what was on her mind, told her, “You’re writing the wrong things.”

At that moment, Ms. Kelly said: “He did what every woman hopes a guy will do. He let down all of his defenses. We both realized that something important was happening.”

Even their proposal didn’t go smoothly. Along with a fake ring he found in a costume store that reminded him of the one from Titanic, he got down on one knee while she sat on a bench in Beach Haven, N.J. “She took so long to answer that I thought I had just made a total fool of myself,” he said.

Their wedding, however, was a fairytale. They tied the knot at Oheka Castle in Huntington, N.Y, where boybanders Kevin Jonas and Joey Fatone married their brides — and Taylor Swift filmed her “Blank Space” music video.

After the nuptials, Kelly told the paper that their connection “didn’t come down to a moment. But everything about the two of us just clicked — our interests, our sense of humor, what we want in life. I just know in my heart that I love the man I’m with, and he loves me.”

Bad first kisses, near dog fatalities, and all.
