'Marvel's Jessica Jones' Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix
Netflix has picked up a second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones was the second in a four-series Marvel package to debut and the second to land a 13-episode second-season renewal, joining Daredevil. Jessica Jones, from Twilight‘s Melissa Rosenberg, also introduced the character of Luke Cage, played by Mike Colter, who headlines the upcoming third Marvel series for Netflix. No premiere date for the second season of Jessica Jones was announced. Netflix’s Ted Sarandos hinted that the release pattern for the second seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones would depend on miniseries The Defenders, which has a contractual premiere date.
Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which has been well received by critics, is described as a suspenseful, edgy look into the life of Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) who, after a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, is rebuilding her personal life and career as a private investigator in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood.
Here is what executive producer/showrunner Rosenberg said about changes she would like to make in Season 2 in an interview with Deadline at the series’ November launch:
“I think one of the things I would be able to do now, that’s harder to do in the first season, is to really expand on the ensemble. Poor Krysten Ritter, she was in every scene that we shot, we beat the crap out of her. She was a shell of a human being by the time we ended, and that is not sustainable. But when you have a show that’s called Jessica Jones, if Jessica Jones isn’t in a scene the rest of it become almost irrelevant until you earn other character storylines. You’ve got to flesh out those characters enough that you can travel.
So, I would hope to further expand on the ensemble, and on Jessica’s world. She ends in a very different place than she started off. She’s still going to be Jessica Jones — that is not going to change. She will continue to drink and make mistakes, and accidentally drop people onto train tracks, but something has changed for her by the end of this season, and I’d just love to explore that in the second season.”
Co-starring opposite Ritter are David Tennant (Kilgrave), Colter (Luke Cage), Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Carrie-Anne Moss, Eka Darville, Erin Moriarty, and Wil Traval, among others. The series is executive produced by Rosenberg and Liz Friedman, along with Mervel TV’s Jeph Loeb.
