Even Marion Cotillard can see the similarities between her new romantic thriller, Allied, and the film that brought her co-star, Brad Pitt, together with his now estranged ex, Angelina Jolie.

Cotillard attended a special screening of the film in New York City on Tuesday, when she acknowledged that Allied and 2005's Mr. & Mrs. Smith have common threads when it comes to the plot of two spies who fall in love. However, the Oscar-winning actress says Allied has a more serious tone.

"Well, Mr. and Mrs. Smith was really a comedy," Cotillard explained to reporters. "And this one is very entertaining but at the same time, there is a very profound questioning about love, about trust -- and the movie is very moving. It's very emotional. But yes, there are common points between the stories, because it's two spies who meet on a mission."

Cotillard later gushed about Pitt's performance in the film.

"He did an amazing job," she said of his ability to act while speaking French. "He was very committed. It was very touching to see him working like he did. He loves French language and he did an amazing job."

Meanwhile, 52-year-old Pitt has been busy promoting the World War II drama overseas in China, in the wake of his split from Jolie. Pitt visited the Beaufort Terrace at Yu Garden in Shanghai on Tuesday, where he appeared to be in good spirits participating in local activities, and painting Chinese letters on a piece of parchment.

In September, 41-year-old Cotillard shut down rumors she had an on-set affair with Pitt a la the reports surrounding Pitt and Jolie during the filming of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, when Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. The French actress also announced she was pregnant with her second child with her longtime love, director Guillaume Canet.

"Many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting," she Instagrammed, adding that she "deeply respects" both Pitt and Jolie. "[Canet] is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need."

ET spoke to Cotillard earlier this month, when she had nothing but positive things to say about her A-list co-star.

"[Brad is] such a good man," Cotillard told us. "Of course he's an amazing actor. He's such a good person that it's really not difficult to get along with him."
