Mariah Carey Is Thinking About Turning ‘Glitter’ Into a Broadway Musical

Mariah Carey dropped a bombshell on the Watch What Happens Live aftershow Sunday night concerning her 2001 box office bomb, Glitter. When asked, Carey admitted that she’s been thinking about turning Glitter into a Broadway musical. Despite the fact that the film was a financial disaster, spending less than a month in theaters and grossing just over $5 million worldwide, the soundtrack sold more than 3 million copies and still has a cult following.

Carey didn’t say whether or not she would star in the stage version of Glitter, as she did in the film, but she did speculate on why the movie didn’t do well.

She explained, “It was something that I tried to do, I think, before people were ready. ’Cause I was like, ‘This is gonna be inspired by the ’80s, and it’s gonna be this and that.’ I mean, it was released on Sept. 11, 2001. You can’t, I mean, whatever.”

It should be specified that the soundtrack was released on Sept. 11, 2001; the film was released 10 days later, on Sept. 21. It’s impossible to tell whether or not the terrorist attacks had any impact on the failure of the film, but Carey admits it wasn’t perfect. If she brings it to the stage, she’d like to take it in a different direction.

“The movie had so many problems. Now it’s so kitsch that it’s like, ‘Watch it for laughs.’ But I mean, I would definitely do something with it for the true fans. Something like a Rocky Horror-esque type of way,” Carey said.
