Add Liza Minnelli to the humongous list of performers signing on for NBC's musical drama "Smash."
Minnelli will guest star as herself in the upcoming second season of the series, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said Tuesday. Minnelli will also sing an original song with Christian Borle, who plays Tom Levitt on the series. The song was written by "Smash" composer and lyricists Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Minnelli's episode, "The Surprise Party," will air later in spring 2013. "Smash" returns to the air for its second season Feb. 5 at 9 p.m.
"Liza Minnelli is the essence of a multi-talented, singular show business sensation, particularly for her extraordinary contributions to Broadway," Greenblatt said. "So what could be more fitting than to have her legendary talent on a show that celebrates a world Liza has dazzled for decades? I had the pleasure of working with Liza when we restored her landmark television special 'Liza With a Z' at Showtime, and to see her artistry up close and personal is a thing to behold."
Minnelli joins a growing roster of guest stars for "Smash"'s second season that includes Bernadette Peters, "Rent" star Jesse L. Martin, "Dreamgirls" Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, former "Will & Grace" actor Sean Hayes and "Hairspray" star Nikki Blonsky have all joined the series in recurring roles.
Minnelli will also be seen in the upcoming fourth season of "Arrested Development," reprising her role as Lucille Austero. The new season of "Arrested Development" will premiere on Netflix in 2013.
