Lifetime has greenlit the dark comedy “Mary Kills People,” which marks the network’s latest scripted series since the breakout “UnReal,” Variety has learned.

The first season, set to debut in 2017, consists of six hourlong episodes. Lifetime is co-producing the show with Entertainment One and Cameron Pictures and Corus Entertainment.

“Mary Kills People” is created by Tara Armstrong and stars “Hannibal” alum Caroline Dhavernas.

The series follows Mary Harris (Dhavernas), a single mother who is an ER doctor by day, but by night, she and her partner, a former plastic surgeon, moonlight as underground angels of death and help terminally ill patients slip away on their own terms — so far, Mary has managed to stay under the radar, but death is hot, business is booming and her double life is getting complicated. When her world starts to unravel, Mary realizes she’s going to have to fight dirty if she’s going to stay in the killing game.

“As ‘UnREAL’ drives Lifetime’s position as a destination for some of the strongest female characters on television, we are thrilled to add to our growing scripted lineup ‘Mary Kills People,’ a unique, rich drama with elements of humor and a fascinatingly complex protagonist that we are thrilled to feature on our network,” said Liz Gateley, Lifetime’s executive vice president and head of programming.

The cast is rounded out by Jay Ryan (“Top of the Lake”), Richard Short (“Vinyl”), Lyriq Bent (“The Book of Negroes”), Greg Bryk (“Bitten”) and Charlotte Sullivan (“Rookie Blue”).

“Rookie Blue” creator Tassie Cameron will serve as executive producer on the series, along with Armstrong, Amy Cameron, Jocelyn Hamilton and Tecca Crosby. Holly Dale will direct all six episodes and serve as co-exec producer. Joining Armstrong on the writing team are Marsha Green, Sherry White and Mike Goldbach.

“With a creative team led by the incomparable Tassie Cameron, Tara Armstrong’s richly layered writing, Holly Dale’s expert direction, and an outstanding cast, ‘Mary Kills People’ will be an intense and thought-provoking series. Lifetime is undoubtedly the perfect home for this topical and ground-breaking drama,” commented John Morayniss, CEO of eOne Television.

Following Lifetime’s success with “UnReal,” “Mary Kills People” is the next scripted series for the cabler, which is focusing on high-profile scripted projects. Lifetime is home to former scripted shows, including “Army Wives,” “Drop Dead Diva” and “Witches of East End,” and has a booming development slate, including a pilot for a Shakespeare anthology thriller, “A Midsummer’s Nightmare.”
