Lena Dunham Flusters Maria Shriver for a Moment of Glorious Awkwardness on ‘Today’
On the Today show Friday, Maria Shriver had the opportunity to interview Lena Dunham, creator, writer, and star of the hit HBO show Girls. Dunham isn’t exactly known for censoring herself during interviews, and this time was no different. Just as it seemed the interview was over, Shriver mentioned that she’d seen three of the episodes from the new season, which begins Feb. 12, and Dunham’s reply had Shriver completely flustered.
“Lena Dunham, thank you for stopping by. I had a chance to look at three shows for this season and it looks terrific,” Shriver said. Dunham replied, “You saw a penis, right?”
This got the ball rolling for what was more than a minute of glorious awkwardness. Shriver laughed nervously as she tried to wrap up the interview while simultaneously trying to get Matt Lauer to bail her out as he laughed off camera, and Dunham didn’t seem to know what the big deal was. Lauer was still laughing as he finally came to Shriver’s rescue — and Dunham’s, for that matter.
